The thing that goes the farthest toward making life worthwhile, that costs the least and does the most, is just a pleasant smile.
The smile that bubbles from the heart that loves its fellow men, will drive away the clouds of gloom and coax the Sun again.
It's full of worth and goodness, too, with manly kindness blent; It's worth a million dollars, and it doesn?t cost a cent.
There is no room for sadness when we see a cheery smile; It always has the same good look; it's never out of style; It nerves us on to try again when failure makes us blue;
当我们看到喜悦的微笑,忧伤就会一扫而光;它始终面容姣好,永不落伍;失败令我们沮丧之时,它鼓励我们再次尝试;
The dimples of encouragement are good for me and you.It pays the highest interest ? for it is merely lent;
鼓励的笑靥于你我大有裨益。它支付的利息高昂无比──只因它是种借贷形式;
It's worth a million dollars, and it doesn?t cost a cent.
A smile comes very easy ? you can wrinkle up with cheer. A hundred times before you can squeeze out a salty tear. It ripples out, moreover, to the heartstrings that will tug, and always lees an echo that is very like a hug.
So, smile away! Folks understand what by a smile is meant. It?s worth a million dollars, and it doesn?t cost a cent.
Regret can be a terrible addiction. Those who suffer from it so often become bitter and full of self-pity.
It is an emotion that serious entrepreneurs cannot afford: they must keep pressing onwards and should not look back with remorse, dwelling on errors of long ago.
As Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, said: ?When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.? Entrepreneurs must learn to manage the conflict between constant experimentation ? which means lots of painful mistakes ? and a fear of failure, which can lead to paralysis.
Likewise, past glory can be a killer. For example, Greg Dyke, who is a clever fellow, still harks back too much to his resignation as director-general of the BBC. He should move on and stop moaning about the injustice of it all.
And Tim Waterstone should give up trying to buy back his bookshop chain, which he finally left more than 10 years ago (after selling it once and then getting involved again). He has tried to repurchase it at least five times, if rumour is to be believed. Possibly the root of the problem is that he exaggerates the chain?s importance, once saying: ?Waterstone?s does more for the day-to-day cultural life of the nation than perhaps anything or anyone else.?
No dou I suffered from a similar delusion in taking over Borders bookshops. But such thoughts were never true, and are even less so now, in the age of e-books and Amazon. Admittedly, I did try to buy back PizzaExpress once, but that was different ? it would he been a sound financial deal.
And who doesn?t he a tale of the one that got away? I remember Did Dein, my predecessor as chairman of the charity Stage One, telling a wonderfully self-deprecating anecdote of his initial activities as a theatrical angel. Mr Dein, who has made a fortune investing in Arsenal football club, backed some early shows from a promising young producer called Cameron Mackintosh, and they unfortunately lost money. Finally, the rentice impresario roached him about supporting an idea to put some of T.S.?Eliot?s poems to music, on stage. Not unreasonably, Mr Dein turned it down. It became, of course, Cats, one of the most successful productions of all time, and helped make Mr Mackintosh a very rich man indeed.
One of my experiences in that vein was Transform, a leading cosmetic surgery company. It was a highly profitable undertaking, serving a booming market, and I believed the acquisition would be a real winner. I spent many weeks negotiating a deal, but then got slightly cold feet at the last minute, and fell out with the vendor over a relatively trivial sum. He immediately turned round and sold it to those astute fellows at Phoenix private equity. Inevitably, they proceeded to make a rapid fortune.
At least my mistake wasn?t as expensive as George Bell?s. He was the former documentary film-maker hired in 1996 to run Excite, the dotcom darling, which achieved a market capitalisation of $35bn at its peak. Three years later, the founders of Google decided that their search business was interfering with their studies and tried to sell it to a number of buyers, including Mr Bell, for just $750,000. He turned it down flat. Excite subsequently went bankrupt, while Google is now worth $170bn.
And it would be hard not to feel some sympathy for James Monaghan. In 1960, he teamed up with his brother Tom in the purchase of a single pizza restaurant in Michigan for $500. But later that year, he decided to go trelling, and so sold his 50 per cent share in the business to his brother in exchange for a used Volkswagen Beetle. A few years later, the company changed its name to Domino?s Pizza, and in 1998 was sold for about $1bn.
By all means treasure experience, and learn from your blunders. But don?t wallow in nostalgia, pining for what might he been. Rather, go ahead and seize the day no matter what. I he little time for those who say: I wish I had started my own business. My only response is: so do it now.
John, a famous musician, took his priceless antique zither and played it in the crowded subway station. The music emanating from the zither was delicately streaming throughout the whole station. However, during the one-hour play, only six or seven people were truly reciating the charming music. A three-year-old kid was so fascinated by the music that he forgot everything around. John only got 52 U.S. dollar for his work that day.
However, in normal days, when John is about to hold a concert, one ticket can be sold at more than 100 dollars and it is extremely hard to buy a ticket even at such a high price. Therefore, later, many passers-by in the station that day felt deeply regretful for not recognizing the famous musician and missing such a valuable but cheap music feast.
I he a very busy friend who had totally changed after knowing that his wife came down with acute illness. He cooked by himself for the family and took a walk with his wife every day. Nonetheless, his wife still did not manage to conquer the illness and passed away after three months. After that, he often sighed miserably that due to his past busy life, he had missed a lot of beautiful time with his wife. But now, it is impossible to make up for it.
A doctor?s son jumped from the 19th floor of a building and left a posthumous letter which expressed his strong desire for staying more with his father, going to see a movie with his father, etc. Not until his son committed had the doctor realized that the most precious thing is not career achievement, but the tight and intact family bonds.
It is no use crying over spilt milk. We he missed a lot of precious things in our life without knowing to cherish them.
Actually, I also missed something precious before. The reason why we would he missed those precious things is less than simple: we had thought that we could still own them tomorrow.
Nevertheless, tomorrow is actually by no means reliable. There was a famous Buddhist monk saying that in many people?s lives, they he only done two things: waiting and regretting. The result is that they were always too late to cherish what they had before they lost it. We would often claim to do something when we grow up, or when we he money or when we become old, etc. However, when we reach the condition we he expected, we could no longer do realize our wish any more, because we he lost it by then.

Find Yourself
Who are we? That is the first question. It’s a question that’s almost impossible to answer.
But we all agree that one’s busy or daily self is not quite one’s real self. We’re quite sure that we’ve lost something in the course of just making our living.。
A crowd is watching a person running about looking for something in a field, and a wise man asks, “What has that person lost?” Someone may guess a watch, another a diamond ring. When everyone has guessed, the wise man who like everyone else there has no idea, says, “I’ll tell you one thing for sure. He’s lost some breath.”
And no one can deny that he’s right. The point is that we often forget our true selves in pursuit of things that are external1 to us, like a bird forgetting its own danger in pursuit of a mantis, which in turn forgets its own danger in pursuit of some other prey.
Just Quit
Quit making excuses! Making excuses or blaming others for any situation in your life is nothing more than playing the victim.
Take responsibility! Make your life decisions, and if you don’t, then it’s your fault. You are a spiritual being in a physical body, and your spirit should run your life. Take it back! Make today the day you quit playing the victim by making excuses and blaming others for what hens to you.
Quit procrastinating! Cancer is not the most deadly killer; procrastination is. It kills dreams. It kills your future. Never use the phrase “I’ll try”. There is no such thing as trying. Pay attention when others use this phrase: ninety-nine percent of the time they do nothing. The words are just an easy way to fort oneself.
Quit thinking self-defeating thoughts! Quit thinking that you can’t do what you want to do. It’s not what you are that’s holding you back; it’s what you think you are. You were given all the equipment you need to acplish anything you desire. Use that power today.
As for bad habits: just quit! Take the challenge. Pick one, and quit it this week. Next week pick another, and so on. Improve your life by being a “quitter” now.
What is your most ideal day? Do you know exactly how you want to live your life for the next five days, five weeks, five months or five years? When was the last best day of your life? When is the next?
The best day of our lives is today. The past is no longer here. We cannot enjoy it any longer. To dwell on the past is to waste the opportunity to enjoy the present. The future is a promise, a time that will not e because what we he is only today. When tomorrow es, it will not be tomorrow any more; it bees your today. You cannot enjoy tomorrow unless you know how to enjoy your today. If you are to live thirty more years, you are going to experience 10,950 todays. But every day that passes without your notice is a day cut off from your life. Your life is a day shorter every new day.
Each day is a decision to live. Today is a gift; this is why it is called the "present". How you use this day is up to you. At each new day, you decide whether to unwrap that gift, or let it stay in the corner and spoil. Each day is a decision to live your ideal life.

As is well known, books teach us to lear n life, truth, science and many other us eful things. They increase our knowledg e, broaden our minds and strengthen o ur character.
Dad
"It's never too late to he a hy childhood," some bumper-sticker author said. I think it is never too late to need Dad.
When we're little, Daddy is in charge of the world, as we know it. Yes, I know we he a President, some countries he kings or prime ministers, and there's always God, but they are really not in charge of the world.
Dad knows everything, he can do anything, he is always right, he can always fix things. He's almost like God.
"Hey, Daddy! Where is Helsinki?" My father always replied, "If you put things away where they belong, you would know where they are." "Hey, Daddy! I really need to know about Helsinki." "OK; let's get the encyclopedia."
"Hey, Dad! Can I use the car for a date tonight?" "Yeah. Be home before midnight." Arriving home at 2:30 a.m., Dad was up waiting. We don't understand about love and anger when we're kids. Dads yell and shout, and we don't realize it is because they care; we think it is because they he to be tough. Not this time. He said, "Thank God you're safe. Go to bed; we'll talk about this in the morning."
"Hey, Dad! I got into trouble at school today. I didn't really do anything wrong. That stupid teacher won't listen to me." "I'll listen. What hened?....Is that really what hened?" Next day, Dad is at my school, talking with my teacher, fixing the misunderstanding. He has such power! I can always count on Dad.
When Daddy starts to get old (about the same time as I am 13 years old), he gets really stupid, but he is still in charge of the world. "Hey, Daddy! What's this with boys? Do you know why they are so weird? Were you like this when you were a boy?" Dad pontificates for awhile on the nature of the -age human animal and I sort of get the hint that even though he is old (35), he knows about both boys and girls. Some dads even know about such matters as safe and child support.
Regardless of what they know (or don't know), they mostly care, and can be counted on to be on your side. When you're a kid, Dads are good for playing basketball in the driveway;Daddies are good audiences for dance recitals.
If we get our foot caught in a bear trap, Dad will free the foot, bind it, and take us to the doctor. Dad doesn't panic; he, being Dad, just automatically knows what to do, and does it.He buries our non-human family members; he fixes the things we break. The small things Dad does for us make us feel valuable and important.
Daddy lectures and pontificates; he is the ultimate authority on everything. He is so totally boring - I hope he doesn't act like such a jerk in front of my friends. If he talks too much, they also will know how stupid he is. Of course, even though he is (during some periods of my life) an utterly stupid nerd, he is not fair game for criticism from others. He is still the best dad there is...
"Hey, Dad! How are you going to vote?" "Not me. I think he's a crook." So argument ensues...Dad is still stupid, but getting a little smarter, and we can listen to him without acknowledging his wisdom.
"Hey, Daddy! Wanna hold the baby for awhile?" Daddy assures his "princess" that her baby is truly a marvel, and "Princess" feels warm and reassured.
"Hey,Dad!Do you he fifty bucks I could borrow?"He does.Even if he doesn't,he will find it or go without something so he will he it.Then he feels embarrassed when we pay him back,and he says,"Naw;you don't he to pay it,"but we do because it is important to do the right thing. Dad taught us that.
Whether Dad is a brain surgeon or a gandy dancer, Dad is always there for us. The back-up unit in case of temporary failure. Even when Dad is 80 and maybe forgets sometimes or maybe has little "accidents," he is still in charge of my world. Even when Daddy needs for us to take care of him, he is still Daddy who knows all and who can do everything.
Whether Dad is a rocket scientist or a janitor, he sweat bullets to take care of us, to teach us what is right, and to make sure we had some fun. Dad taught us the true meaning of respect and how to earn it. No matter what career choice we make, Dad will be proud of us. He will do his best to make sure we he the education and/or training we need in order to be able to take care of ourselves and our burgeoning families.
Eventually, Dad goes on, as all living creatures do. It is a loss that is unutterably cruel. It is frightening to envision life without Dad. Even Dads need Dads. The fact that one is 50 or so years old does nothing to diminish the need for Dad.
We can recall sitting in the bleachers at the ball game with Dad - a bonding thing that gruffly says "I love you." Upon achieving majority, we could even he a beer with Dad. We can recall being walloped by Dad and know that it was an act of love. We cherish the time spent with Dad while he taught us the necessary maintenance tasks associated with car ownership. We still capture the feeling that came over us when we saw Dad's face out there in the audience, and he was proud, and he and Mom knew they had created something very special when they made us.
Dad presides over all festive events. "How is today different from other days?" Of course he knows, and knows how to explain; it is he who takes charge and knows how to do everything;he is the leader, and he is in charge of our world. The Captain of the ocean sea.
Father's Day is kind of an embarrassment to Dad - he is accustomed to being the provider;not the recipient. We honor Dad for being in charge of the world, but Dad somehow is a bit diffident about being the honoree on Father's Day.
Dads don't really lee us when they go.Their spirits inhabit our psyche, and stay with us always.Fortunately,the parting is usually gradual, and sometimes, as when they need our care,we he an opportunity to show our gratitude and our love directly to him.Being aware that it will hen"some day"does not really anesthetize us against the actuality of the event.Emotions cannot be intellectualized, and pain is pain. It is okay to feel pain - to hurt. It is okay to heal, which we always do. It is also okay to become the Dad who knows everything, can do everything, and who is in charge of the world.

it rains and the wind is never weary;
my though still cling to the moldering past,
but the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
and the days are dark and dreary.
be still,sad heart!and cease repining;
behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
thy fate is the common fate of all,
into each life some rain must fall,
some days must be dark and dreary.
天冷、阴暗、沉闷;
下着雨,风也刮个不停;
我的生活寒冷、阴郁、沉闷;
下着雨,风也刮个不停;
安静吧,忧伤的心!别再悔恨;
乌云后面太阳依然辉煌灿烂;

Enjoy Life Now, AND Se for Later
Often we're told that we he to suffer now ? give up what we want ? in order to succeed later, that in order to se we must sacrifice. Give up instant gratification to get delayed gratification.
But you can do both.
For years, I was confused about this, as I read books and websites that sent me two different messages:
Pleasure later. The first message was that in order to be successful, in order to build wealth, you he to delay gratification. You can't he instant gratification and be successful.
Pleasure now. The second message was usually from other sources on Hiness, but sometimes from the same source: enjoy life now, while you can, because it's short and you never know when your last day will come. Live every day like it's your last. Trouble is, I agree with both messages. And if you read this site often, you?ll see that I send both messages: Live frugally and simply! But also enjoy life!
That's because I've reconciled the two philosophies into one: Live life now and enjoy it to the fullest ? without destroying your future. The key to doing that? Find ways to enjoy life completely, utterly, maximally ? that don?t cost your future very much.
Here are some tips for actually living that philosophy:
Find free or cheap pleasures. Frugality does not he to be boring or restrictive ? if you use your imagination. Be creative and find ways to he fun ? loads of it ? without spending much money. He a picnic at the park, go to the beach, do crafts, board games, fly a kite, make art, bake cookies ? I could list a hundred things, and you could come up with a few hundred more. Make a list of simple pleasures, and enjoy them to the maximum. This is the key to the whole idea of enjoying life now without spending tomorrow's dollar. See Sor the Little Things .
Make simplifying fun. I'm a big fan of simplifying my life, from decluttering to creating a simple lifestyle in every way. And to me, this is great fun. I get rid of stuff (and possibly make money selling it) and he a blast doing it. That?s good math.
Rediscover what?s important. Oftentimes we spend tons of money, shopping, going out, watching movies, eating out ? without really enjoying life. And when we stop to think about it, we never he time for the things we really want to do. Well, that's probably because your life is filled with things that aren't very important to you. Instead, step back and really think about what?s important to you. Then get rid of the other (expensive) stuff, and focus on what's important. Listen to some stuff on my list: my wife and kids, other friends and family, reading, writing, exercising, volunteering, spending quiet time in contemplation. Guess how many of those things cost a lot of money? Read more here .
Make people a priority. This is related to the above point, but I thought I'd give it a little more emphasis. If you give "stuff" a priority ? stuff like gadgets, nice furnishings, nice clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. ? then you will spend a lot of money. But if you make people a priority ? the people you love most, you close friends and family ? you don't need to spend a dime to enjoy life. Make some time to visit with friends, or your parents ? and he a conversation with them that doesn't involve eating out or going to the movies. Just sit, he some iced tea or hot cocoa (depending on the weather), and talk. Tell jokes and laugh your heads off. Talk about books you've read, movies you?ve watched, new things going on in your life, your hopes and dreams. And make time for your kids or your significant other ? really spend time with them, doing things that don't cost money. (See Spend Time with Family and Loved Ones , 100 Ways to He Fun With Your Kids and 50 Ways to Be Romantic on the Cheap .)
Find time for yourself. Make time every day, and every week, to spend time alone. It really gives more meaning and enjoyment to your life, rather than rushing through life with no time to think, to breathe. For ideas on how to make this time, see these ways to create time for solitude .
Sometimes, splurge. You shouldn't restrict yourself from expensive pleasures all the time ? it's not good to develop the feeling of deprivation. To prevent that, once in awhile, buy yourself something ? or better yet, give yourself a decadent treat. I love things with dark chocolate or berries. Crepes with ice cream and berries are one of my forites. Just don't go overboard ? and learn to enjoy the splurge to the fullest. If you truly take the time to enjoy a treat, you don't need a lot of it.
Track your successes. It doesn't really matter how you track your success ? you can use gold stars for creating a new simplifying or frugalfying habit, or a spreadsheet chart to track your decreasing de and increasing sings or investments. Tracking is a great way to not only provide motivation, but make the process of changing fun.
Reward yourself. And in order to make it more fun, celebrate every little success! Set rewards for yourself (hopefully not too expensive!) along your path to success ? celebrate one day, two days, three days, a week, two weeks, three, a month ? you get the idea.
Volunteer. One of the most rewarding things for my family has been when we he managed to volunteer. It's actually something we only started doing last year, but since then, we've done it a bunch of times in a number of different ways. And while it doesn't cost a dime, it is tremendously satisfying in ways that money could never buy. Read more .
Live in the moment. Learn to think not so much about the past or future, but about what you are going through right now. Be present. It may seem trite, but it's the key to enjoying life to the fullest ? without hing to spend money. Think about it ? you can spend money on eating out, but if you are not really thinking about what you're eating, you may not enjoy it much at all. But if you cook a simple but delicious meal, and really taste every bite, it can be tremendously enjoyable without costing a lot. Read more .
Slow down. In the same way, you can't really enjoy life to the fullest if it's rushing past you like it's on fast forward. Ever think about how quickly a week, a month, or a year goes by? Perhaps you're in the fast lane too much. Try slowing down, and things will be less stressful and more enjoyable. Drive slower , eat slower , live slower .
Learn to find cheap, cool stuff. Call me crazy, but I love shopping at thrift stores. You can find so many cool things there, and it costs so little. Garage sales are the same way. Or check out Freecycle , or read 20 Ways to Find Free or Cheap Books .
Hiness is a Choice
"Hiness, like unHiness, is a proactive choice." - Stephen Covey
We want it. We strive for it. We envy others who he it. We can see it just beyond the horizon ?as soon as we get richer, thinner, married, divorced, younger, older, find a dream job, or quit a lousy one.
Yet, how many people do you know who ?he everything? and still yearn for true hiness? The kind of hiness I'm talking about is that kind that comes from within and is not based on status, position, wealth, or possessions. It's a natural resource that is readily ailable to all. Hiness is a choice.
It had previously been thought that the brain is unchanged by life experiences. Recent breakthroughs in psychology, neurology, and chemistry he revealed that Hiness is attainable, and the brain can actually change as a result of conscious selection of thoughts.
Experts in the field he given Hiness a nickname -- ?subjective well-being.? One person's Hell may be Paradise for another. For example, bungee jumping would be sheer torture for me to endure. For a thrill-seeker friend of mine, this activity represents ultimate joy. Clearly our set points are based on different subjective criteria.
Each of us is born with a genetically coded hiness ?set point? which is not based entirely on what hens to us. This explains why some people are naturally cheerful most of the time, while others walk around with a permanent scowl on their faces ? determined in part by their genetic predisposition. However, according to University of Minnesota professor emeritus of psychology Did Lykken, ?Hiness is genetically influenced, although it is not genetically fixed. The brain's structure can be modified through practice. If you really want to be hier than your grandparents provided for in your genes, you he to learn the kinds of things you can do, day by day, to bounce your set point up and oid the things that bounce it down.?
A study conducted with identical twins raised in different environments suggests that an individual's set point determines about 50% of their disposition to Hiness. In other words, some people are hy , regardless of their less-than-ideal circumstances, while others are unhy , even when they seem to ?he it all.?
According to Ed Diener, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois and coeditor of the Journal of Hiness Studies , a number of tools can be used to raise subjective well-being. Here are some examples:
Getting enough sleep
Getting enough exercise
Nurturing close relationships -- connection, physical touch
Maintaining an optimistic outlook ? choosing positive thoughts
Keeping a gratitude journal
Forgiving others and letting go
Utilizing signature strengths (honesty, kindness, ingenuity, love of learning, etc.) in service of something larger than yourself
Acting hy by changing your physiology -- Put on a hy smile!
meditation*
*meditation is a very effective way to change subjective well-being. Richard Didson, professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin, found in his research that high levels of activity at the left frontal area of the cerebral cortex coincided with feelings of Hiness, joy, and alertness. Activity on the right frontal area corresponded to feelings of sadness, anxiety, and worry. Since meditation generates more left-brain activity, studies he concluded that it offers a way to produce more positive emotion.
Even in the midst of hardship, one can experience simple pleasures by using some of the tools listed above.
14 Timeless Ways to Live a Hy Life
How we achieve Hiness can be different for each one of us. Our passions, expectations, life experiences, and even our personalities all contribute to the level of hiness we experience in our lives. Some find Hiness in their careers while others prefer the bliss found in their marriages or other intimate relationship.
No matter how you define hiness for yourself, there are certain universal and time-proven strategies to bring, and sustain, more hiness into your life. The following 14 ways to live a hy life can be adapted and even customized to fit your needs. Over time, these strategies will become positive and life-changing habits that will begin to bring more Hiness, joy and peace into your life.
1. Notice What?s Right
Some of us see the glass as being half-full, while others see the glass as half-empty. The next time you are caught in traffic, begin thinking how nice it is to he a few moments to reflect on the day, focus on a problem you he been trying to solve, or brainstorm on your next big idea. The next time you get in the slow line at the grocery store, take the opportunity to pick up a tabloid magazine and do some ?guilty pleasure? reading. Take all that life throws out you and reframe it with what?s right about the situation. At the end of the day, you will more content, at peace and hy. Take the time to begin to notice what?s right and see the world change in front of your eyes.
2. Be Grateful
How many times do you say the words ?thank you,? in a day? How many times do you hear these same words? If you are doing the first thing, saying the ?thank yous,? the latter will naturally hen. Learn to be grateful and you will be open to receive an abundance of joy and Hiness.
3. Remember the Kid You Were
Do you remember how to play? I?m not referring to playing a round of golf or a set of tennis. I?m talking about playing like you did when you were a child ? a game of tag; leap frog, or street baseball when the bat is a broken broom handle and the bases are the parked cars. One way to find or maintain your Hiness is to remember the kid you were and play!
4. Be Kind
There is no question that by merely watching acts of kindness creates a significant elevation in our moods and increases the desire for us to perform good deeds as well. Kindness is indeed contagious and when we make a commitment to be kind to ourselves and to others we can experience new heights of joy, Hiness and enthusiasm for our lives.
5. Spend Time with Your Friends
Although an abundant social and romantic life does not itself guarantee joy, it does he a huge impact on our Hiness. Learn to spend time with your friends and make the friendships a priority in your life.
6. Sor Every Moment
To be in the moment is to live in the moment. Too often we are thinking ahead or looking ahead to the next event or circumstance in our lives, not reciating the ?here and now.? When we sor every moment, we are soring the Hiness in our lives.
7. Rest
There are times when we need the time to unwind, decompress, or to put it simply, just ?to chill.? life comes at all of us hard and fast. Time, as do the days on the calendar, keeps going forward at its own natural pace, which is not always the pace we would choose. Fatigue, stress and exhaustion may begin to settle in on us faster than we may think, or notice. The best remedy for this is indeed rest.
8. Move!
The expression a ?runner?s high? does not infer an addiction, but a feeling or a state of mind - a state of euphoria. There is no question exercise, or any physical exertion, elevates your mood and enhances a more positive attitude as well as fosters better personal self-esteem and confidence. Indeed, one way to increase your Hiness is to move!
9. Put on a Hy Face
Sometimes we he to fake it until we make it. I?m not suggesting that we not be honest, real or authentic, but I?m suggesting, sometimes, we just need to put on a hy face and keep moving forward. Researchers claim that smiling and looking like we are hy will indeed make us hier. Studies further show that if we act like we are hy then we can experience greater joy and Hiness in our lives.
10. Pursue Your goals
The absence of goals in our lives, or more specifically oiding to pursue our goals, makes us feel like we are stuck and ineffective. The pursuit of goals in our personal lives, in our relationships, or with our careers, is the difference between hing a mediocre life or a life full of passion and enthusiasm. pursue your goals and watch your Hiness soar.
11. Finding Your Calling
Some find meaning in religion or spirituality while others find purpose in their work or relationships. Finding your calling may be much more than accomplishing one simple strategy for increasing your Hiness, but hing a sense of purpose ? of feeling like you are here for a reason ? can perhaps bring the greatest joy of all
12. Get into the Flow
Flow is the form of joy, excitement and hiness that occurs when we are so absorbed in an activity we love that we can loose ourselves and time seems to stand still. What creates flow is unique to each one of us. To find and sustain true Hiness in our lives, we must get off the sidelines and get into the flow.
13. Play to Your Strengths
One way to achieve flow is by understanding and identifying our strengths and core values, and then begin to use these every day. Once we aware of our strengths and we begin to play to your strengths we can better incorporate them in all aspects of our lives.
14. Don?t Overdo It
Know when to say when. What gives you joy and Hiness the first time may not work the second time. Too much of a good thing may begin not to feel as good if the ?thing? becomes more of a routine, or an expectation. Set healthy and reasonable boundaries for yourself and don?t overdo it.

Fifty-percent Expectation
I believe in the "50-percent theory". Half the time things are better than normal; the other half, they are worse. I believe life is a pendulum swing. It takes time and experience to understand what normal is, and that gives me the perspective to deal with the surprises of the future.
Let's benchmark the parameters: Yes, I will die. I've dealt with the deaths of both parents, a best friend, a beloved boss and cherished pets. Some of these deaths he been violent, before my eyes, or slow and agonizing. Bad stuff, and it belongs at the bottom of the scale.
Then there are those high points: romance and marriage to the right person; hing a child and doing those Dad things like ing my son's baseball team, paddling around the creek in the boat while he's swimming with the dogs, discovering his compassion so deep it manifests even in his kindness to snails, his imagination so vivid he builds a spaceship from a scattered pile of Legos.
But there is a vast meadow of life in the middle, where the bad and the good flip-flop acrobatically. This is what convinces me to believe in the 50-percent theory.
One spring I planted corn too early in a bottomland so flood-prone that neighbors laughed. I felt chagrined at the wasted effort. Summer turned brutal-- the worst heat we and drought in my lifetime. The air-conditioner died,the well went dry, the marriage ended, the job lost, the money gone. I was living lyrics from a country tune -- music I loathed. Only a surging Kansas CityRoyals team, bound for their first World Series, buoyed my spirits.
Looking back on that horrible summer, I soon understood that all succeeding good things merely offset the bad. Worse than normal wouldn't last long. I am owed and sor the halcyon times. They reinvigorate me for the next nasty surprise and offer assurance that I can thrive. The 50 percent theory even helps me see hope beyond my Royals' recent slump, a field of struggling rookies sown so that some year soon we can reap an October harvest.
Oh, yeah, the corn crop? For that one blistering summer, the ground moisture was just right, planting early allowed pollination before heat,withered the tops, and the lack of rain spared the standing corn from floods. That winter my crib overflowed with corn -- fat, healthy three-to-a-stalk ears filled with kernels from heel to tip -- while my neighbors' fields yielded only brown, empty husks.
Although plantings past may he fallen below the 50-percent expectation, and they probably will again in the future, I am still sustained by the crop that flourishes during the drought.

Funny or not?
Whether we find a joke funny or not largely depends on where we he been brought up. The sense of humour is mysteriously bound up with national characteristics. A Frenchman, for instance, might find it hard to laugh at a Russian joke. In the same way, a Russian might fail to see anything amusing in a joke which would make an Englishman laugh to tears.
Most funny stories are based on comic situations. In spite of national differences, certain funny situations he a universal eal. No matter where you live, you would find it difficult not to laugh at, say, Charlie Chaplin's early films. However, a new type of humour, which stems largely from America, has recently come into fashion. It is cal1ed' sick humour '. Comedians base their jokes on tragic situations like violent death or serious accidents. Many people find this sort of joke distasteful. The following example of 'sick humour' will enable you to judge for yourself.
A man who had broken his right leg was taken to hospital a few weeks before Christmas. From the moment he arrived there, he kept on pestering his doctor to tell him when he would be able to go home. He dreaded hing to spend Christmas in hospital. Though the doctor did his best, the patient's recovery was slow. On Christmas day, the man still had his right leg in plaster. He spent
a miserable day in bed thinking of all the fun he was missing. The following day, however, the doctor consoled him by telling him that his chances of being able to lee hospital in time for New Year celebrations were good. The man took heart and, sure enough, on New Year's Eve he was able to hobble along to a party. To compensate for his unpleasant experiences in hospital, the man drank a little more than was good for him. In the process, he enjoyed himself thoroughly and kept telling everybody how much he hated hospitals. He was still mumbling something about hospitals at the end of the party when he slipped on a piece of ice and broke his left leg.
The death of a ghost
For years villagers believed that Endley farm was haunted. The farm was owned by two brothers, Joe and Bert Cox. They employed a few farm hands, but no one was willing to work there long. Every time a worker ge up his job, he told the same story. Farm labourers said that they always woke up to find the work had been done overnight. Hay had been cut and cow sheds had been cleaned. A farm worker, who stayed up all night, claimed to he seen a figure cutting corn in the
moonlight. In time, it became an accepted fact that the Cox brothers employed a conscientious ghost that did most of their work for them.
No one suspected that there might be someone else on the farm who had never been seen. This was indeed the case. A short time ago, villagers were astonished to learn that the ghost of Endley had died. Everyone went to the funeral, for the 'ghost' was none other than Eric Cox, a third brother who was supposed to he died as a young man. After the funeral, Joe and Bert revealed
a secret which they had kept for over forty years. Eric had been the eldest son of the family. He had been obliged to join the army during the first World War. As he hated army life he decided to desert his regiment. When he learnt that he would be sent abroad, he returned to the farm and his farther hid him until the end of the war. Fearing the authorities, Eric remained in hiding after the war as well. His father told everybody that Eric had been killed in action. The only other people who knew the secret were Joe and Bert. They did not even tell their wives. When their father died, they thought it their duty to keep Eric in hiding. All these years, Eric had lived as a recluse(隐遁者, 寂寞者). He used to sleep during the day and work at night, quite unaware of the fact that he had become the ghost of Endley. When he died, however, his brothers found it impossible to keep the secret any longer.
The double life of Alfred Bloggs
These days, people who do manual work often receive far more money than clerks who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently referred to as' white collar workers' for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to work. Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation.
When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job. He simply told her that he worked for the Corporation. Every morning, he left home dressed in a smart black suit. He then changed into overalls (n.工作服) and spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret. Alf's wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just found another job. He will soon be working in an office as a junior clerk. He will be earning only half as much as he used to, but he feels that his rise in status is well worth the loss of money. From now on, he will wear a suit all day and others will call him 'Mr. Bloggs', not 'Alf'.
