TRUST
信任
Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, Pa., a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. I was late and if anyone asked me how fast I was driving, I'd he to plead the Fifth Amendment to oid self-incrimination. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I was clinching my fists with impatience.
At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I roached the light, it turned red and I braked to a halt. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being arrested, because there was obviously no cop around, and there certainly would he been no danger in going through it.
Much later that night, after I'd met with a group in Lewisburg and had climbed into bed near midnight, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of a contract we all he with each other. It's not only the law, but it's an arrangement we he, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights. Like most of us, I'm more apt to be restrained from doing something bad by the social convention that disroves of it than by any law against it.
It's amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it? And we do, too. Trust is our first inclination. We he to make a deliberate decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical. Those attitudes don't come naturally to us.
It's a damn good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual trust, not distrust. This whole thing we he going for us would fall apart if we didn't trust each other most of the time. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up; we deliver when we say we'll deliver; and we pay when we say we'll pay.
We trust each other in these matters, and when we don't do what we've promised, it's a deviation from the normal. It hens often that we don't act in good faith and in a trustworthy manner, but we still consider it unusual, and we're angry or disointed with the person or organization that violates the trust we he in them.
I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.

Justice be spreaded, and the bad be punished. The whole world is silken and beautiful as feather.
Jia Pingwa? An Ugly Stone
I used to feel sorry for that ugly black piece of stone lying like an ox in front of our door; none knew when it was left there and none paid any attention to it, except at the time when wheat was harvested and my grandma, seeing the grains of wheat spread allover the ground in the front yard of the house, would grumble: “This ugly stone takes so much space. Move it away someday.”
Thus my uncle had wanted touse it for the gable when he was building a house, but he was troubled to find it of very irregular shape, with no edges nor corners, nor a flat plane on it. And he wouldn’t bother to break it in half with a chisel because the river bank was nearby, where he could he easily fetched a much better stone instead. Even when my uncle was busy with the flight of steps leading to the new house he didn’t take a fancy to the ugly stone. One year when a mason came by, we asked him to make us a stone mill with it. As my grandma put it: “Why not take this one, so you won’t he to fetch one from afar.” But the mason took a look and shook his head: He wouldn’t take it for it was of too fine a quality.
It was not like a fine Piece of white marble on which words or flowers could be carved, nor like a smooth big bluish stone people used to wash their clothes on. The stone just lay there in silence, enjoying no shading from the Pagoda trees by the yard, nor flowers growing around it. As a result weeds multiplied and stretched all over it, their stems and tendrils gradually covered with dark green spots of moss. We children began to dislike the stone too, and would he taken it away if we had been strong enough; all we could do for the present was to lee it alone, despite our disgust or even curses.
The only thing that had interested us in the ugly stone was a little pit on top of it, which was filled with water on rainy days. Three days after a rainfall, usually, when the ground had become dry, there was still water in the pit, where chickens went to drink. And every month when it came to the evening of the 15th of lunar calendar, we would climb onto the stone, looking up at the sky, hoping to see the full moon come out from far away. And Granny would give us a scolding, afraid lest we should fall down — and sure enough, I fell down once to he my knee broken.
So everybody condemned the stone: an ugly stone, as ugly as it could be.
Then one day an astronomer came to the village. He looked the stone square in the eye the moment he came across it. He didn’t take his lee but decided to stay in our village. Quite a number of people came afterwards, saying the stone was a piece of aerolite which had fallen down from the sky two or three hundred years ago—what a wonder indeed! Pretty soon a truck came and carried it away carefully.
It ge us a great surprise! We had never expected that such a strange and ugly stone should he come from the sky! So it had once mended the sky, given out its heat and light there, and our ancestors should he looked up at it. It had given them light, brought them hopes and expectations, and then it had fallen down to the earth,in the mud and among the weeds, lying there for hundreds of years!
My grandma said: “I never expected it should be so great! But why can’t people build a wall or pe steps with it?”
“It’s too ugly,” the astronomer said.
“Sure, it’s really so ugly.”
“But that’s just where its beauty lies!” the astronomer said, “its beauty comes from its ugliness.”
“Beauty from ugliness?”
“Yes. When something becomes the ugliest, it turns out the most beautiful indeed. The stone is not an ordinary piece of insensate stone, it shouldn’t be used to build a wall or pe the steps, to carve words or flowers or to wash clothes on. It’s not the material for those petty common things, and no wonder it’s ridiculed often by people with petty common views.”
My grandma became blushed, and so did I.
I feel shame while I feel the greatness of the ugly stone; I he even complained about it hing pocketed silently all it had experienced for so many years, but again I am struck by the greatness that lies in its lonely unyielding existence of being misunderstood by people.

Born in 1758, Horatio nelson, the son of a pastor, was a small, frail1 child who loved sailing. As a young ager he joined the British Ny and, while journeying to the East Indies, caught a fever that seriously damaged his health. But he never allowed this to hold him back. At age 18, he was ointed a lieutenant2 in the Royal Ny and by the year 1802 was made commander-in-chief.
Two years later, at the battle of Trafalgar, Nelson defeated the combined3 French and Spanish fleets4. This was the greatest nal victory in British history and left British in control of the seas for the rest of the 1800's. Unfortunately, Nelson was mortally injured but lived long enough to know that his fleet had won the battle. His last words were, "Thank God I he done my duty."
Nelson was a man of fearless courage and devotion. He believed in his country, in his cause, and in himself. He once said, "I am of the opinion5 that the boldest measures are the safest." Nelson was a man greatly admired by others who said about him, "His frail body housed6 a great spirit."
One person with a belief is equal to a force of 99 who only he interest.
Beliefs are remarkably powerful in that they are to our lives what a rudder7 is to a ship. That is, they control the direction and destiny of our lives. While we don't always live the life we profess8, we always live the life we believe. Simply put, if I believe I am a failure, I will set myself up to fail. If I believe I am a successful person, I will succeed, and so on.
One very successful woman, a well-known entertainer, didn't he much going for her. She would never win a beauty contest and at age 38 was living on welfare. After reading Claude Briston's The Magic of Believing and beginning to believe in herself, her life took a dramatic turn. One gift she had was the ability to make people laugh. Once she believed this, she didn't allow what she didn't he to stop her using what she did he.
Jimmie Durante was another entertainer who wouldn't he made a fortune with his looks. But he capitalized on9 his weakness and turned it into one of his great strengths -- what he did he -- and put these to good use because he believed he could.

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in the sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engre it in a stone where no wind can ever erase it."

Every living person has problem
What is the secret ingrdient of tough people that enables them to suceed? Why do they survive the tough times when others are overcome by them? Why do they win when others lose? Why do they soar when others sink?
The answer is very simple. It's alll in how they perceive their problems. Yes, very living person has problems. A problem-free life is an illusion- a mirage in the desert. Accept that fact.
Every mountain has a peak. Every valley has its low point. Life has its ups and downs, its peaks and its valleys. No one is up all the time, nor are that down all the time. Problems do end. They are all resolved in time.
you may not be able to control the times, but you can compose your response. You can turn you pain into profanity-or into peotry. The choice is up to you. You may not he shosen your tough time, but you can choose how you react to it. For instant, what is the positive reaction to a terrible finacial setback? In this situation would it be the positive resaction to cop out and run away? Escape through alcohol, drug, or suiside? No! Such negetive reactions only produce greater problems by promising a temporary 'solution' to the pressing problem. The positive solution to a problem may require courage to initiate it. When you control your reaction to the seemingly uncontrollable problem of life, then in fact you do control the problem's effect on you Your reaction to the problem is the last word! That's the botom line. What will you let this problem do to you? It can make you tender or tough. It can make you better or bitter. It all depends on you.
In the final analysis, the tough people who survive the tough times do so because thet've chosen to react positive;y to their predicament. Tough times never last , but tough people do. Tough people stick it out. History teaches us that every problem has a lifespan. No problem is permanent. Storms always give way to sun. Winter always thaws into springtime. Your storm will pass. Your winter will thaw. Your problem will be solved
Learn to live in the present moment
To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live on the present moment. Irrespective of what hened yesterday or last year, and what may or may not hen tomorrow, the present moment is where you are---always!
Without question, many of us he mastered the neurotic art of spending much of our lives worrying about variety of things--all at once. We allow past problems and future concerns dominate your present moments, so much so that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. On the flip side, we also postpone our gratification, our stated priorities, and our hiness, often convincing that "someday" will be much better than today. Unfortunately, the same mental dynamics that tell us to look toward the future will only repeat themselves so that 'someday' never actually arrives. Jhon Lennone once said, "Life is what is hening while we are busy making other plans." When we are busy making 'other plans', our children are busy growing up, the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out of shape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life.
Many people lives as if life is a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn't. In fact, no one he a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we he, and the only time that we he any control over. When we put our attention on the present moment, we push fear from our minds. Fear is the concern over events that might hen in the future--we won't he enoughh money, our children will get into trouble,we will get old and die, whatever.
To combat fear, the best stradegy is to learn to bring your attention back to the present. Mark Twain said,"I he been through some terrible things in life, some of which actually hened." I don't think I can say it any better. Practice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your effort will pay great dividends.
3\How High Can You Jump?
Flea trainers he observed a strange habit of fleas while training them. Fleas are trained by putting them in a cardboard box with a top on it. The fleas will jump up and hit the top of the cardboard box over and over and over again.
As you watch them jump and hit the lid, something very interesting becomes obvious. The fleas continue to jump, but they are no longer jumping high enough to hit the top.
When you take off the lid, the fleas continue to jump, but they will not jump out of the box. They won't jump out because they can't jump out. Why? The reason is simple. They he conditioned themselves to jump just so high.
Once they he conditioned themselves to jump just so high, that's all they can do!
Many times, people do the same thing. They restrict themselves and never reach their potential. Just like the fleas, they fail to jump higher, thinking they are doing all they can do.
(Love Your Life )
Henry Did Thoreau/享利.
However mean your life is,meet it and live it ;do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are.It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise.Love your life, poor as it is.You may perhaps he some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hourss, even in a poor-house.The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode;the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and he as cheering thoughts,as in a palace. The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any.May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town;but it often hens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means.which should be more disreputable.Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage.Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends,Turn the old, return to them.Things do not change;we change.Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.
Motherly and Fatherly Love
Motherly love by its very nature is unconditional. Mother loves the newborn infant because it is her child, not because the child has fulfilled any specific condition, or lived up to any specific expectation. Unconditional love corresponds in one of 'the deepest longings, not only of the child, but of every human being; on the other hand, to be loved because of one's merit, because one deserves it, always lees dou: maybe I did not please the person whom I want to love me, maybe this or that--there is always a fear that love could disear. Furthermore, "deserved" love easily lees a bitter feeling that one is not loved for oneself, that one is loved only because one pleases, that one is, in the last analysis, not loved at all but used. No wonder that we all cling to the longing for motherly love, as children and also as adults. The relationship to father is quite different. Mother is the home we come from, she is nature, soil, the ocean; father does not represent any such natural home. He has little connection with the child in the first years of his life, and his importance for the child in this early period cannot be compared with that of mother. But while father does not represent the natural world, he represents the other pole of human existence; the world of thought, of man-made things, of law and order, of discipline, of trel and adventure. Father is the one who teaches the child, who shows him the road into the world. Fatherly love is conditional love. Its principle is "1 love you because you fulfill my expectations, because you do your duty, because you are like me." In conditional fatherly love we find, as with unconditional motherly love, a negative and a positive aspect. The negative aspect is the very fact that fatherly love has to be deserved, that it can be lost if one does not do what is expected.
The positive side is equally important. Since his love is conditional, I can do something to acquire it, I can work for it; his love is not outside of my control as motherly love is.

Besides "the big three" sports, Americans play a variety of other sports. In warm weather, people enjoy water sports. Lovers of surfing, sailing and scuba diving flock to the ocean. Swimmers and water skiers also revel in the wet stuff. Fishermen try their luck in ponds, lakes and rivers. In winter sportsmen delight in freezing fun. From the first snowfall, skiers hit the slopes. Frozen ponds and ice rinks become playgrounds for skating and hockey. People play indoor sports whatever the weather. Racquetball, weightlifting and bowling are year-round activities.

For many people in the U.S., sports are not just for fun. They're almost a religion. Thousands of sports fans buy expensive tickets to watch their forite teams and athletes play in person. Other fans watch the games at home, glued to their TV sets. The most devoted sports buffs never miss a game. Many a wife becomes a "sports widow" during her husband's forite season. America's devotion to athletics has created a new class of wealthy people: professional athletes. Sports stars often receive million-dollar salaries. Some even make big money earing in advertisements for soft drinks, shoes and even toiletries.

Not all Americans worship sports, but athletics are an important part of their culture. Throughout their school life, Americans learn to play many sports. All students take physical education classes in school. Some try out for the school teams, while others join intramural sports leagues. Athletic events at universities attract scores of fans and benefit the whole community. Many people also enjoy non-competitive activities like hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping or hunting. To communicate with American sports nuts, it helps if you can talk sports.

Sports in America represent the international heritage of the people who play. Many sports were imported from other countries. European immigrants brought tennis, golf, bowling and boxing to America. Football and baseball came from other Old World games. Only basketball has a truly American origin. Even today some formerly "foreign" sports like are gaining American fans. In 1994 the U.S. hosted the World Cup for the first time ever.
