The shy turtle

Tilly is a shy trutle. She hao no friends. If anyone came by to talk or play, she would duck in her shell and wait until they went away.

Then one day, Freddy the frog came swimming by.

"Tilly, don't hide in your shell. I just want to play. But Tilly was too shy."

"No. No. Just go away."

Freddy the frog had many friends. He knew all the fish, he liked the dragonflies. He joked with the ladybugs, and he hung out with the bees, but his best friend was Betty the Butterfly.

"Hi,Betty. How are you?"

"Hi, Freddy, I'm fine. How are you?"

"I don't think Tilly the turtle likes me. Whenever I ask her to e out and play, she hides in her shell and won't e out until I go away."

Betty says," I think Tilly likes you, but she is very shy, and she is very lonely. I think you should keep asking her to e out and play. One day she will e out of her shell."

Freddy liked Betty best because Betty was *** art, and Freddy kept asking Tilly to e out and play.

One day when he was just swimming by, he said to Tilly, "You can't he any friends if you hide in your shell. I think you should e on out and give it a try."

Tilly was lonely and she knew that Freddy was right.

She had no friends because she always hid in her shell.

So, Tilly poked her head out and looked all around, and she was amazed at how many new friends she found.

Benjamin Franklin

Franklin's life is full of charming stories which all young men should know -- how he sold books in Boston, and became the guest of kings in Europe; how he was made Major General Franklin, only to quit because, as he said, he was no soldier, and yet helped to organize the army that stood before the trained troops of England and Germany.

This poor Boston boy, without a day's schooling, became master of six languages and never stopped studying; this neglected rentice conquered the lightning, made his name famous, received degrees and diplomas from many colleges, and became forever remembered as "Doctor Franklin", philosopher, scientist and political leader.

Self-made, self-taught, the candle maker's son ge light to all the world; the street bookseller set all men singing of liberty; the rentice became the most sought after man across the world, and brought his native land to praise and honor him.

He built America, for what our nation is today is largely due to the management, the forethought, the wisdom, and the ability of Benjamin Franklin. He belongs to the world, but especially he belongs to America. The people around the world honored him while he was living; he is still regarded as the loftiest man by the mon people today after his death. And he will live in people's hearts forever.

Actaeon loved the hunting. He had been searching the woods every day. When she was tired with hunting artemis used to take abath in a little mountain spring.

On this particular afternoon he felt so tired with running about that he, by accident, came over to the springing search of water.

He was thus surprised to find Artemi *** a thing.

The angry goddess was not to be calmed. She splashed water in the hunter's face. As soon as the water drops fell on Actaeon, he was changed into a stag. Just at that moment he heard the barking of his team of fifty hunting dogs. They were ing up to him. He was suddenly seized with fear, and presently ran away. The dogs, all driven mad by the goddess, ran after him closely. Running as fast as his legs could carry him. Actaeon was soon out of breath, feeling certain that he was to die. He dropped to the ground and made no further attempt to get up. The dogs came nearer to their former master and tore him to places.

A Game of Cards

By Norman Cousins

Ever since I was old enough to read books on philosophy, I he been intrigued by the discussions on the nature of man. The philosophers he been debating for years about whether man is primarily good or primarily evil, whether he is primarily altruistic or selfish, cooperative or bative, gregarious or self-centered, whether he enjoys free will or whether everything is predetermined.

As far back as the Socratic dialogues in Plato, and even before that, man has been baffled about himself. He knows he is capable of great and noble deeds, but then he is oppressed by the evidence of great wrongdoing.

And so he wonders. I don’t presume to be able to resolve the contradictions. In fact, I don’t think we he to. It seems to me that the debate over good and evil in man, over free will and determini *** , and over all the other contradictions—it seems to me that this debate is a futile one. For man is a creature of duali *** . He is both good and evil, both altruistic and selfish. He enjoys free will to the extent that he can make decisions in life, but he can’t change his chemistry or his relatives or his physical endowments—all of which were determined for him at birth. And rather than speculate over which side of him is dominant, he might do well to consider what the contradictions and circumstances are that tend to bring out the good or evil, that enable him to be a nobler and responsible member of the human race. And so far as free will and determini *** are concerned, something I heard in India on a recent visit might be worth passing along. Free will and determini *** , I was told, are like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you represents determini *** . The way you play your hand represent free will.

Now where does all this lee us? It seems to me that we ought to attempt to bring about and safeguard those conditions that tend to develop the best in man. We know, for example, that the existence of fear and man’s inability to cope with fear bring about the worst in him. We know that what is true of man on a *** all scale can be true of society on a large scale. And today the conditions of fear in the world are, I’m afraid, affecting men everywhere. More than twenty-three hundred years ago, the Greek world, which had attained tremendous heights of creative intelligence and achievement, disintegrated under the pressure of fear. Today, too, if we read the signs correctly, there is fear everywhere. There is fear that the human race has exhausted its margin for error and that we are sliding into another great conflict that will cancel out thousands of years of human progress. And people are fearful because they don’t want to lose the things that are more important than peace itself—moral, democratic, and spiritual values.

The problem confronting us today is far more serious than the destiny of any political system or even of any nation. The problem is the destiny of man: first, whether we can make this planet safe for man; second, whether we can make it fit for man. This I believe—that man today has all the resources to shatter his fears and go on to the greatest golden age in history, an age which will provide the conditions for human growth and for the development of the good that resides within man, whether in his individual or his collective being. And he has only to mobilize his rational intelligence and his conscience to put these resources to work.

A Straight Wall Is Hard to Build

By Lou R. Crandall

As I try to outline my thoughts, the subject bees more and more difficult. I he many basic beliefs, but as I try to pick and choose, it seems to me that they can all be summarized in the word character. Obviously what you believe is a fundamental thing. There can be no fanfare, no embellishments. It must be honest.

An architect once told me that the most difficult structure to design was a simple, monumental shaft. The proportions must be perfect to be pleasing. The hardest thing to build is a plain, straight wall. The dimensions must be absolute. In either case, there is no ornamentation to hide irregularities, no moldings to cover hidden defects, and no supports to strengthen concealed weaknesses.

I’m using this example to illustrate human character, which, to me, is the most important, single power in the world today. The young people of today are, in reality, foundations of structures yet to be built. It is obvious that the design of these human structures is the bined efforts of many human architects. Boys and girls are influenced first by their parents, then by their friends, and finally by their business associates. During this period of construction, the human character is revised and changed until, at maturity, a fairly well fixed form of character is found.

There are a few human straight walls and fewer human monumental shafts. Such men and women are personalities of great beauty and are so rare that history records their being and holds them up as examples for the future. The Biblical characters are, for me, the closest examples of human perfection. They were unselfish, steadfast in their faith, and unstinted in their help to others. Today in this world of turmoil and trouble, we could use more of such people, but they do not just hen along. I believe that they are the result of concentrated effort on the part of the parents and associates, and the more we build with character, the better this world will bee.

This may sound like a dreamer’s hope and a theoretical goal, which can never be reached. I do not think so. The world, as a whole, has progressed tremendously, material-wise, and we are a fortunate nation in that we are leading the possession. It is, I believe, natural that nations not so fortunate should look upon us with envy. We would do the same if the positions were reversed, so we should not judge too harshly the efforts of others to equal our standard of living. In either case, the fortunate or the unfortunate character in the individual, and collectively in the nation, stands out.

I agree that it is easier to build character under ideal conditions, but not forget that character is also required to give, as well as to receive. It should be to the benefit of humanity if all individuals—and this includes myself—did a renovating or remodeling job on our own character; it may merely be a case of removing such rough edges or tossing away moldings to expose irregularities; in some cases to remove a prop and stand on one’s own feet. In any event, if some of us set the examples, others will follow, and the results should be good. This I believe.

Causes Are People

by Susan Parker Cobbs

IT HAS NOT been easy for me to meet this assignment. In the first place, I am not a very articulate person, and then one has so many beliefs, changing and fragmented and transitory beliefs---besides the ones most central to our lives. I he tried hard to pull out and put into words my most central beliefs. I hope that what I say won’t sound either too simple or too pious.

I know that it is my deep and fixed conviction that man has within him the force of good and the power to translate force into life. For me, this means that a pattern of life that makes personal relationships more important. A pattern that makes more beautiful and attractive the personal virtues: courage, humility, selflessness and love. I used to *** ile at my mother because the tears came so readily to her eyes when she heard or read of some incident that called out these virtues. I don’t *** ile any more because I find I he bee more and more responsive in the same inconvenient way to the same kind of story.

And so I believe that I both can and must work to achieve the good that is in me. The words of Socrates keep ing back to me: “The unexamined life is not worth living.” By examination we can discover what is our good and we can realize that knowledge of good means its achievement. I know that such self-examination has never been easy---Plato maintained that it was soul’s central search. It seems to me peculiarly difficult now. In a period of such rapid material expansion and such wide spread conflicts, black and white he bee gray and will not easily separate.

There is a belief which follows this. If I he the potential of the good life within me and pulsion to express it, then it is a power and pulsion mon to all men. What I must he for myself to conduct my search, all men must he: freedom of choice, faith in the power and the beneficent qualities of truth. What frightens me most today is the denial of these rights, because this can only e from the denial of what seems to me the essential nature of man. For if my conviction holds, man is more important than anything he has created and our great task is to bring back again into a subordinate position the monstrous superstructures of our society.

I hope this way of reducing our problems to the human equation is not simple an evasion of them. I don’t believe it is. For most of us it is the area in which we can work : the human area---with ourselves, with the people we touch, and through these two by vicarious understanding, with mankind. I believe this is the safest starting point. I watch young people these days wrestling with our mighty problems. They are much more concerned with them and involved in them than my generation of students ever was. They are deeply aware of the words “quality” and “justice” In their great desire to right wrong they are prone to forget that causes are people, that nothing matters more than people. They need to add to their crusades the warmer and more affecting virtues of passion and love. And here again e those personal virtues that bring tears to the eyes.

One further word, I believe that the power of good within us is real and es there from a source outside and beyond ourselves. Otherwise, I could not put my trust so firmly in it.

King Xuan was fond of shooting an arrow and liked to be boasted as a powerful bowman he was, although he could draw no bow heier than thirty jin, When he showed is bow to his attendants, they pretended to try to draw it, but only bent it to half its full extent.

"This must weigh at least ninety jin!" They all cried. "None but your Majesty could use such a bow." And at this the prince was pleased.

Years ago while attending a dinner party hosted by some friends of mine the hostess served a meal with this delicious mushroom sauce. After the meal there was a *** all amount left over and the hostess decided to allow her pregnant cat to enjoy the treat as well as the guests. The guests all felt it was a great gesture and showed the cat was a member of the family.

The sauce was the highlight of the evening's topic of conversation, everyone mented on how delicious it was, and the hostess beamed at all the pliments. One of the guest mented that toadstools were much like mushrooms except for being toxic, and how funny it would be if such a culinary treat were made from that instead.

As if on cue, the pet cat started crying and squirming on the floor, clutching its belly. The hostess exclaimed, "Oh my God, it's the mushroom sauce!"

We all went to the emergency room in a mad rush, and had our stomachers pumped after telling them we had eaten poisonous mushrooms. This was an extremely unpleasant experience.

We got back, the cat was lying on the floor peacefully looking up at us, and had given birth to kittens.

 A Proposal to myself

I am writing this the day before I know my fate-the day before I know the answer to what will hen in my life. I am writing this with my mind set that I will carry on and not let life pass me by.

I am determined that I will see the world in every aspect that may be possible for me. I am sure that I will become something, even if the envelope that carries my life inside it gives me bad news.

I will not listen to those who insist that a university degree is the only way you will find a means of living these days.

I will ignore those who tell me that I am a dreamer without a dream.

I will tell myself that although I may not be accepted to college, I've seen the northern lights curtain themselves in front of me.

I he tasted the wine in Paris and swum in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

I he been to an Irish pub, and I he watched the sun rise from the Roman Forum.

I he climbed the Swiss Alps and counted the stars in the sky until I could see no more .

I he experienced what it is like to live, and I will tell myself that even if that envelope is small and exudes rejection, the person that they he rejected will carry on and go on to see more mountains and swim in more waters and keep on counting the stars, because somewhere it is written that I must continue to live my life the way I knows how to.

 Chasing After Your Dream

Dreams! How nice do they sound? I am not talking about the dreams we he when we are asleep but about the life long aspirations in each one of us. I am sure many or rather shoud I say all of us he goals in our lives. It could be the goal to be the next millionaire or to be a popular celebrity. Even if your goal is something small, you should be proud that you do he a goal.

Some never tend to think about goals in life. Although this may sound as a surprise it is ture. These people take life as it comes without planning and go with the flow of events in their life. But again there are many who love planning for everything in their life.

In fact, hing a goal in life would make anyone more focused and determined in reaching that target. Wish to get a job as a web designer? Your dream can come ture if you work on your dream. How, you might ask? Start learning web-designing skills and when you're skilled, you will find that you can get your desired job easily. So, do you see that all it takes for your goals to materialize is some work on your part? I he heard some grumble that their dreas are just dreams and can never become true. Well, it all depends on what kind of goals you're aiming at. If you're dying to be the next star in Hollywood but you're camera-shy and you don't know anything about acting, your dream to make it big in Hollywood might remain as a dream. But if you're very determined to make it and you're already enrolling yourself in agting classes and talking to experiencedacors about acting, you can be pretty sure that you're already half-way there to make your dream into a reality. After all, if one is willing to put in the efforts, their goals can become within reach.

So never say that your dream will forever be a dream. Go ahead, plan on making that dream a reality and watch how easily you can attain that target.

 Good luck.

 As High As A Kite

I was sitting on the beach the other day watching a kite (In the shape of a two winged aircraft) flying high in the sky. It made wonderful acrobatic maneuvers as if piloted by a person with a lifetimes experience of flying. However, we all know a kite cannot fly without the power of the wind. So how real was the performance I was watching?

Firstly, it took a person with great imagination to design a kite shaped like a tiger moth aircraft that can encompass the aerodynamics to be powered by the wind. That accomplishment in itself takes great skill and awareness of the forces of nature.

Secondly, the person who purchased the kite needs to read the instructions and learn how to ly the winds forces to achieve a great display. The mind and hand coordination requires a mastery to attain the required skills.

Thirdly, without the power of the wind, the kite would just be a charming, colorful, textured replica of a Tiger Moth aircraft. We cannot see the wind....but we know it must exist, for we can feel it and see the consequences of its power.

So, we he a relationship between the designer and manufacturer which ultimately will connect to the user. It then needs a power of nature that cannot be seen in order to allow the kite to operate. The display I was observing had a lot of behind the scenes work that needed to be performed, before the show could go on.

Evolution of Sleep

Sleep is very ancient. In the electroencephalographic sense we share it with all the primates and almost all the other mammals and birds: it may extend back as far as the reptiles.

There is some evidence that the two types of sleep, dreaming and dreamless, depend on the life-style of the animal, and that predators are statistically much more likely to dream than prey, which are in turn much more likely to experience dreamless sleep. In dream sleep, the animal is powerfully immobilized and remarkably unresponsive to external stimuli. Dreamless sleep is much shallower, and we he all witnessed cats or dogs cocking their ears to a sound when arently fast asleep. The fact that deep dream sleep is rare among prey today seems clearly to be a product of natural selection, and it makes sense that today, when sleep is highly evolved, the stupid animals are less frequently immobilized by deep sleep than the *** art ones. But why should they sleep deeply at all? Why should a state of such deep immobilization ever he evolved? Perhaps one useful hint about the original function of sleep is to be found in the fact that dolphins and whales and aquatic mammals in general seem to sleep very little. There is, by and large, no place to hide in the ocean. Could it be that, rather than increasing an animal's vulnerability, the function of sleep is to decrease it? Wilse Webb of the University of Florida and Ray Meddis of London University he suggested this to be the case. It is conceivable that animals who are too stupid to be quiet on their own initiative are, during periods of high risk, immobilized by the implacable arm of sleep. The point seems particularly clear for the young of predatory animals. This is an interesting notion and probably at least partly true.

Evolution and Wheels

In the past, evolutionary biologists contemplating the absence of wheels in nature agreed thatthe explanation was not undesirability: wheels would be good for animals, just as they are forus. Animals were prevented from evolving wheels, the biologists reasoned, by the followingdilemma: living cells in an animal's body are connected to the heart by blood vessels, and tothe brain by nerves. Because a rotating joint is essential to a wheel, a wheel made of livingcells would twist its artery vein and nerve connections at the first revolution, making livingimpracticable.

However, there is a flaw in the argument that the evolution of wheeled animals was thwartedby the insoluble joint problem. The theory fails to explain why animals he not evolvedwheels of dead tissue with no need for arteries and nerves. Countless animals, including us,bear external structures without blood supply or nerves - for example, our hair andfingernails, or the scales, claws, and ho rns of other animals. Why he rats not evolved bonywheels, similar to roller skates?Paws might be more useful than wheels in some situations, butcats' claws are retractable: why not retractable wheels? We thus arrive at the serious biologicalparadox flippantly termed the RRR dilemma: nature's failure to produce rats with retractableroller skates.

Electricity

The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there is apower failure, people grope about in flickering candlelight, cars hesitate in the streets becausethere are no traffic lights to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators.

Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuriesago. Nature has arently been experimenting in this field for millions of years. Scientists arediscovering more and more that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricitythat could benefit humanity.

All living cells send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses ofrecord; they form an electrocardiogram, which a doctor can study to determine how well theheart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain wes of electricity, which can be recorded inan electroencephalogram. The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely *** all -- often so *** all that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in someanimals, certain muscle cells he bee so specialized as electrical generators that they donot work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cells are linked together, theeffects can be astonishing.

The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can send a jolt of as much as eight hundredvolts of electricity through the water in which it lives. ***An electric house current is only onehundred twenty volts.*** As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel's body arespecialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver correspondsroughly to the length of its body.

My father was my hero

My father was my hero, all throughout my life.

The father of eight children, he saw his share of strife.

When I was very little, he eared to be so large.

In my eyes he could do anything, we all knew he was in charge.

He was a man of great strength both physically and in mind,

but in him there was a gentleness, he found ways to be outgoing and kind.

Many days of childhood were greeted with a kiss,

and songs to me as I awoke, those days I surely miss.

He made me feel so special, "Miss America" he would sing.

I knew I had my father's love. It ge me courage to do almost anything.

From him I learned to stand up tall, to be proud of who I am.

Strength and determination were the qualities of this fine man.

As the years of his life dwindled down, that strength kept him alive.

Plus the unfailing determination to help my ailing mother he the care she needed to survive.

He loved her and his children, so much he ge up years of his life

caring for this woman, his soul mate, his wife.

Day and night he struggled for years with her disease.

A lesser man would he been brought down to his knees.

With illnesses of his own, he still stood by her side

caring for her and loving her until the day she died.

Twenty days later his own time was at an end.

I lost my hero, my father, a man who was my friend.

A few years he passed, and life just isn't the same.

But as Father's Day roaches, I will celebrate his name.

With prayers to him and God above to stay by my side,

to watch over me and guide me, to look down on me with pride.

For I am my father's daughter, one day we will meet again.

But until then I will remember, and the love will never end.

Wealth, success and love

A woman came out of her house and saw three old men with long white beards sitting in her front yard. She did not recognize them. She said, "I don't think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and he something to eat."

"Is the man of the house home?", they asked. "No", she replied, "He's out." "Then we cannot come in", they replied. In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had hened. "Go tell them I am home and invite them in!" The woman went out and invited the men in. "We do not go into a house together," they replied. "Why is that?" she asked.

One of the old men explained: "His name is Wealth," he said pointing to one of his friends, "and he is Success, and I am Love." Then he added, "Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home."

The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed. "How nice!", he said. "Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth. Let him come and fill our home with wealth!" His wife disagreed. "My dear, why don't we invite Success?" Their daughter-in-law was listening from the other corner of the house. She jumped in with her own suggestion: "Wouldn't it be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love." "Let us heed our daughter-in-law's advice," said the husband to his wife. "Go out and invite Love to be our guest."

The woman went out and asked the three old men, "Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest."

Love got up and started walking toward the house.

The other two also got up and followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success: "I only invited Love, Why are you coming in?"

The old men replied together: "If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would he stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever He goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!"

Essence of hiness

The notion that we he to work at hiness comes as news to many people. We assume it's a feeling that comes as a result of good things that just hen to us, things over which we he little or no control. But the opposite is true: hiness is largely under our control. It is a battle to be waged and not a feeling to be waited.

Most of us compare ourselves with anyone we think is hier--a relative, an acquaintance or, often, someone we barely know, I once met a young man who struck me as particularly successful and hy. He spoke of his love for his beautiful wife and their daughters, and of his joy at being a radio talk-show host in a city he loved. I remember thinking that he was one of those lucky few for whom everything goes effortlessly right. Then we started talking about the Internet. He blessed its existence, he told me, because he could look up information on multiple sclerosis, the terrible disease afflicting his wife, I felt like a fool for assuming nothing unhy existed in his life.

Almost all of us he images of how life should be. The problem, of course, is that only rarely do people's jobs, spouses, and children live up to these imagined ideals. Here's a personal example: No one in my family had ever divorced. I assumed that marriage was for life. So when my wife and I divorced after five years of marriage and three years after the birth of our son, my world ced in. I was a failure in my own eyes.

I later remarried but confided to my wife, Fran, that I could not shake the feeling that my family life had failed. She asked me what was wrong with our family now. I had to admit that, our family life was wonderful. "Then why don't you celebrate it?" she asked. That is what I decided to do. But first I had to get rid of the image of a "perfect" family.

One effective way of sabotaging hiness is to look at something and fixate on even the smallest flaw. It's like looking up at a tiled ceiling and concentrating on the space where one tile is missing. As a bald man told me, "Whenever I enter a room, all I see is hair." Once you've determined what your missing tile is, explore whether acquiring it will really make you hy. Then do one of three things: get it, replace it with a different tile, or forget about it and focus on the tiles in your life that are not missing.

I he spent years studying hiness, and one of the most significant conclusion I've drawn is this; there is little correlation between the circumstance of people's lives and how hy they are, A moment's reflection should make this obvious. We all know people who he had a relatively easy life yet are essentially unhy. And we know people who he suffered a great deal but generally remain hy.

Located in the checkroom in Union Station as I am, I see everybody that comes up the stairs.

Harry came in a little over three years ago and waited at the head of the stairs for the passengers from the 9:05 train.

I remember seeing Harry that first evening. He wasn't much more than a thin, anxious kid then. He was all dressed up and I knew he was meeting his girl and that they would be married twenty minutes after she arrived.

Well, the passengers came up and I had to get busy. I didn't look toward the stairs again until nearly time for the 9:18 and I was very surprised to see that the young fellow was still there.

She didn't come on the 9:18 either, nor on the 9:40, and when the passengers from the 10:02 had all arrived and left, Harry was looking pretty desperate. Pretty soon he came close to my window so I called out and asked him what she looked like.

"She's small and dark," he said, "and nine years old and very neat in the way she walks. She has a face," he said, thinking a minute, "that has lots of spirit. I mean she can get mad but she never stays mad for long, and her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. She's got a brown fur, but maybe she isn't wearing it."

I couldn't remember seeing anybody like that.

He showed me the telegram he'd received: ARRIVE THURSDAY. MEET ME STATION. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. MAY. It was from Omaha, Nebraska.

"Well," I finally said, "why don't you phone to your home? She's probably called there if she got in ahead of you."

He ge me a sick look. "I've only been in town two days. We were going to meet and then drive down South where I've got a job. She hasn't any address for me." He touched the telegram.

When I came on duty the next day he was still there and came over as soon as he saw me.

"Did she work anywhere?" I asked.

He nodded. "She was a typist. I telegraphed her former boss. All they know is that she left her job to get married."

Harry met every train for the next three or four days. Of course, the railroad lines made a routine checkup and the police looked into the case. But nobody was any real help. I could see that they all figured that May had simply played a trick on him. But I never believed that, somehow.

One day, after about two weeks, Harry and I were talking and I told him about my theory. "If you'll just wait long enough," I said, "you'll see her coming up those stairs some day." He turned and looked at the stairs as though he had never seen them before.

The next day when I came to work Harry was behind the counter of Tony's magazine stand. He looked at me rather sheepishly and said, "Well, I had to get a job somewhere, didn't I?"

So he began to work as a clerk for Tony. We never spoke of May anymore and neither of us ever mentioned my theory. But I noticed that Harry always saw every person who came up the stairs.

Toward the end of the year Tony was killed in some argument over gambling, and Tony's widow left Harry in complete charge of the magazine stand. And when she got married again some time later, Harry bought the stand from her. He borrowed money and installed a soda fountain and pretty soon he had a very nice little business.

Then came yesterday. I heard a cry and a lot of things falling. The cry was from Harry and the things falling were a lot of dolls and other things which he had upset while he was jumping over the counter. He ran across and grabbed a girl not ten feet from my window. She was small and dark and her eyebrows came to a little point in the middle.

For a while they just hung there to each other laughing and crying and saying things without meaning. She'd say a few words like, "It was the bus station I meant" and he'd kiss her speechless and tell her the many things he had done to find her. What arently had hened three years before was that May had come by bus, not by train, and in her telegram she meant "bus station," not "railroad station." She had waited at the bus station for days and had spent all her money trying to find Harry. Finally she got a job typing.

"What?" said Harry. "He you been working in town? All the time?"

She nodded.

"Well, Heens. Didn't you ever come down here to the station?" He pointed across to his magazine stand. "I've been there all the time. I own it. I've watched everybody that came up the stairs."

She began to look a little pale. Pretty soon she looked over at the stairs and said in a weak voice, "I never came up the stairs before. You see, I went out of town yesterday on a short business trip. Oh, Harry!" Then she threw her arms around his neck and really began to cry.

After a minute she backed away and pointed very stiffly toward the north end of the station. "Harry, for three years, for three solid years, I've been right over there working right in this very station, typing, in the office of the stationmaster."

Freda Bright says, "Only in opera do people die of love." It's true. You really can't love somebody to death. I've known people to die from no love, but I've never known anyone to be loved to death. We just can't love one another enough.

A heart-warming story tells of a woman who finally decided to ask her boss for a raise in salary. All day she felt nervous and rehensive. Late in the afternoon she summoned the courage to roach her employer. To her delight, the boss agreed to a raise.

The woman arrived home that evening to a beautiful table set with their best dishes. Candles were softly glowing. Her husband had come home early and prepared a festive meal. She wondered if someone from the office had tipped him off, or... did he just somehow know that she would not get turned down?

She found him in the kitchen and told him the good news. They embraced and kissed, then sat down to the wonderful meal. Next to her plate the woman found a beautifully lettered note. It read, "Congratulations, darling! I knew you'd get the raise! These things will tell you how much I love you."

Following the supper, her husband went into the kitchen to clean up. She noticed that a second card had fallen from his pocket. Picking it off the floor, she read, "Don't worry about not getting the raise! You deserve it anyway! These things will tell you how much I love you."

Someone has said that the measure of love is when you love without measure. What this man feels for his spouse is total acceptance and love, whether she succeeds or fails. His love celebrates her victories and soothes her wounds. He stands with her, no matter what life throws in their direction.

Upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa said, "What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family." And love your friends. Love them without measure.

Each time something in our life ends, it creates room for a new experience.

Within each new experience is a stepping-stone. Some are *** all stones and others are big ones. Some are fun and some are tiring, but with each passing day we learn why we are here, what our duty is, and why different people e in and out of our lives.

We must first work on the inside and the outside will follow. Think about it. What is truly your life’s duty? Do everything you can to do it. It’s a journey. duanwenw Take the adventure.
